Ernest Shackleton, Trans Antarctic Expedition on the ship Endurance, 1914 - 1917.
1914 - Dogs on the deck of the Endurance sailing south to Antarctica. There was usually nowhere for the dogs to go on Heroic Age ships other than on deck where they were swept by wind and sea too in rough weather. Tied up and no chance of exercise until the ship made landfall.

1916 - The lifeboat James Caird with Shackleton's small party sent to fetch rescue has reached South Georgia but is unable to land and is riding hurricane force winds offshore
