Robert Falcon Scott, British Antarctic Expedition (South Pole Expedition) on the ship Terra Nova, 1910 - 1913.

1911 - Cherry-Garrard, the winter journey to retrieve an emperor penguin egg:

    "It blew force 3 that night with a temperature of -65.2° - next morning -60°. We made 2½ miles with the usual relaying, and camped at 8 p.m. with the temperature -65°. It really was a terrible march, and parts of both my feet were frozen at lunch."


1957 - International Geophysical Year (IGY) begins, it led to 12 nations establishing 50 bases in Antarctica, to widespread international co-operation and and then directly to the Antarctic Treaty.
