James Clark Ross with the ships Erebus and Terror, 1839 - 1843.
1841 - James Clark Ross discovers the active volcano Mount Erebus in eruption, he names it after his ship, nearby dormant volcano Mount Terror is named for his accompanying ship.
In 1845 these ships will leave for the Arctic on Franklin's fateful northwest passage expedition to be lost along with all members of both crews until the ships are found again as wrecks in 2014 and 2016.
