1838 - the French ships L'Astrolabe and Zéléé, the first presence of France in Antarctica as part of a three year long world voyage of discovery. Here trying to make progress through pack-ice, no power other than sail and the muscle of the crew.


Robert Falcon Scott, British Antarctic Expedition on the ship Discovery, 1901 - 1904.

1904 - Scott's ship the Discovery (centre) is released from where it had been trapped in sea-ice for two years by relief ships, Morning and Terra Nova.
