Historical Antarctic Pictures and Events


1895 - during a Norwegian sealing and whaling voyage on the ship Antarctic under Henrik Bull the earliest undisputed landing on continental Antarctica took place at Cape Adare. Carsten Borchgrevink claimed to have been the first to set foot on the Antarctic continent, two sailors with him Leonard Kristense and Alexander Tunzelman each also claimed they were the first.

Robert Falcon Scott, British Antarctic Expedition on the ship Discovery, 1901 - 1904.

1903 - The relief ship Morning arrives at Hut Point during the middle summer of Scott's expedition. Scott's ship the Discovery is 8-9 miles away still surrounded by solid ice and cannot be broken out.
