Robert Falcon Scott, British Antarctic Expedition on the ship Discovery, 1901 - 1904.
1904 - The still iced-in Discovery after 2 winters, with the Morning and Terra Nova sent to rescue her and her crew, it took seven weeks to break through 18 miles of ice with hard work and explosives. Had it not been released, instructions were to abandon the Discovery.
