1820 - Russian Fabien Gottleib von Bellingshausen with the ships Vostok and Mirnyi crosses the Antarctic Circle, the first to do so since Cook in 1773. Each crew member was paid 8 times the normal amount with extra bonuses and allowances for officers and scientists.

1898 - Roald Amundsen is the first man to ski in Antarctica, this was the first purely scientific expedition to Antarctica and the first to winter at continental latitudes.
