Ernest Shackleton, Trans Antarctic Expedition on the ship Endurance, 1914 - 1917.

1916 - Perce Blackborow famed polar stowaway aboard the Endurance has the frostbitten toes of his left foot amputated by Drs Macklin and McIlroy in a hut made from upturned boats heated by a fire of blubber and penguin skins on Elephant Island. Chloroform was used as anaesthetic. The operation was successful, the other men sheltered in a nearby cave while waiting.


Robert Falcon Scott, British Antarctic Expedition (South Pole Expedition) on the ship Terra Nova, 1910 - 1913.

1910 - Captain Robert Scott's ship, the Terra Nova sails from Cardiff, Wales for Antarctica. Scott is not aboard being involved with expedition matters, he left later on a faster passenger ship joining the Terra Nova in South Africa. It will be his last expedition.

1911. Paraselene, a halo around the moon - McMurdo Sound, 10.30 am. Also known as moon dogs, formed by ice crystals in the atmosphere reflecting light from the moon, one of a number of atmospheric phenomena that are relatively more common in the polar regions, especially as in this case in the depths of the Polar Night, here just six days from Midwinter's Day. A watercolour by Edward Wison painted while at the expedition base with Scott's South Pole Expedition.
