Ernest Shackleton, British Antarctic Expedition on the ship Nimrod, 1907- 1909.

1908 - The second unsuccessful attempt to climb Mt. Erebus, here the would-be climbers are carrying a loaded sledge across kenyte lava. This group reached 2000ft and were trapped in their tent for 5 days by a blizzard. Another attempt reached the summit later on.


Douglas Mawson, Australasian Antarctic Expedition on the ship Aurora, 1911 - 1914.

1913 - Douglas Mawson reaches Aladdin's Cave (a small shelter and depot dug into the ice) after a harrowing journey including the loss of his two travelling companions. From barely surviving on dog meat he finds three oranges and a pineapple which had been brought from the ship.
