Ernest Shackleton, Trans Antarctic Expedition on the ship Endurance, 1914 - 1917.

1916 - Shackleton, Worsley, Crean, McNish, McCarthy and Vincent leave Elephant Island on the modified lifeboat James Caird to sail to South Georgia. 800 miles of wet, cold and discomfort. They should take 14 days, South Georgia is a speck in the ocean at this distance, the winds are with them. The next day the bay fills with pack ice.
