Nobu Shirase, Japanese Antarctic Expedition on the ship Kainan Maru, 1911 - 1912.
1912 - Nobu Shirase's "Dash Patrol" reach their farthest south at 80° 5' S. Virtually ignored on leaving Japan he was received as a hero on his return. His was the first non-European team to explore Antarctica.
1820 - Russian, Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen was the first human to lay eyes on the continent of Antarctica, though he didn't realise it at the time.
