1820 - Irishman Edward Bransfield on the 216 ton brig Williams, claims to be the first to see the Antarctic continent, mountains at the tip of the Trinity Peninsula. It was later found a Russian expedition led by Bellingshausen had beaten him to the discovery by two days though he was unaware at the time what he had seen.
