Robert Falcon Scott, British Antarctic Expedition (South Pole Expedition) on the ship Terra Nova, 1910 - 1913.

1912 - Scott and his South Pole party begin the long journey back to Ross Island after finding that Amundsen had beaten them to their goal by about a month.

This was Scott's 2nd expedition to Antarctica, both were pioneering, extensively scientific operations which left an enormous legacy of research and exploration that exists to this day.


Nobu Shirase, Japanese Antarctic Expedition on the ship Kainan Maru, 1911 - 1912.

1912 - The Kainan Maru enters the Bay of Whales where Amundsen's ship Fram is anchored, Amundsen will return from the pole in a week.
