Historical Antarctic Pictures and Events

Robert Falcon Scott, British Antarctic Expedition (South Pole Expedition) on the ship Terra Nova, 1910 - 1913.

1912 - Captain Scott dies in his tent on the Ross Ice Shelf with Bowers and Wilson just 11 miles from a large food and fuel depot after being pinned down by a blizzard for ten days. The picture shows a cairn built over the tent when it was discovered in November 1912. Tryggve Gran skied back to the hut in Scott's skis leaving his own as a marker. Wilson and Bowers were found in the attitude of sleep with sleeping bags over their heads, Scott had thrown back his sleeping bag flaps and opened his coat, his arm flung across Wilson, it is assumed he was the last to die.

Erich von Drygalski, German National Antarctic Expedition on the ship Gauss, 1901 - 1903.

1902 - Erich von Drygalski ascends to 1,600 feet in a tethered hydrogen balloon and uses the information learned to plan the rest of the expedition.
