Otto Nordenskjold, Swedish Antarctic Expedition on the ship Antarctic, 1901-1904.

1902 - Otto Nordenskjold (2nd left) and officers on the the "Antarctic", note all the wood piled on the upper deck, partly for hut building. The ship was crushed by ice 25 miles off shore (after the wood had been unloaded and a hut built), two parties one of six and one of three men were forced to overwinter with minimal supplies, all were rescued by the Argentine ship Uruguay which had been prearranged to look for for survvivors when the Antarctic failed to return to port in South America.

1912 - Edgar Evans with Captain Scott's South Pole party dies in his sleeping bag on the return from the pole.


Carsten E. Borchgrevink, British Antarctic Expedition on the ship Southern Cross, 1898 - 1900.

1899 - The first in Antarctica dogs arrive at Cape Adare, this was also the first night anyone spent on the Antarctic continent. During unloading seven men were isolated with a tent by a blizzard, they survived by bringing in the dogs to lay on them for warmth, the dogs proved themselves from the outset.
