Ernest Shackleton, Trans Antarctic Expedition on the ship Endurance, 1914 - 1917.
1916 - Shackleton, Worsley, and Crean finding themselves on the wrong side of mountainous South Georgia set out to get help for their men still on Elephant Island. No-one had ever ventured more than a mile inland here and it is the start of winter.
