Robert Falcon Scott, British Antarctic Expedition (South Pole Expedition) on the ship Terra Nova, 1910 - 1913.

1911 - Wilson, Bowers and Cherry-Gerrard reached Cape Crozier on Ross Island after 19 long, dark days.

This ‘Winter Journey’, of the Expedition was planned by Dr. Edward Wilson and was later referred to as the ‘Worst Journey in the World’ by Cherry-Gerrard in his book of the same title. Wilson led a party of three from Cape Evans to Cape Crozier on Ross Island. They made the return journey of almost 100 kilometres during complete 24-hour darkness and plummeting winter temperatures of below -60F (-51C) all to collect emperor penguin eggs.

"The horror of the 19 days it took us to travel from Cape Evans to Cape Crozier would have to be re-experienced to be appreciated; and anyone would be a fool who went again."
    - Apsley Cherry-Gerrard
