Adrien de Gerlache, Belgian Antarctic Expedition on the ship Belgica, 1897 - 1899.
1898 - Carl Wiencke, a sailor is lost overboard from the SY Belgica in a storm off the coast of Graham Land, despite heroic efforts to save him, he let go of a lifeline when almost safely back on board. Wiencke Island was named in his honour.
