Ernest Shackleton, Trans Antarctic Expedition on the ship Endurance, 1914 - 1917.
1915 - A rope connects snow cairns leading from Shackleton's Endurance. In the event of a white-out when on the ice, the line would lead anyone disoriented by the conditions back to the ship and was a much bigger target to find than the ship itself. It also meant that the men could get out and exercise in poor visibility.
