Wilhelm Filchner, Second German Antarctic Expedition on the ship Deutschland, 1911-13.
1911 - The Second German Antarctic Expedition on the ship Deutschland under Wilhelm Filchner sails from Germany. They will attempt to determine if Antarctica is a single landmass or many islands and try to find a strait from the Weddell Sea to the Ross Sea. The expedition started in disharmony with two competing factions, ended in a mutiny on the way home and led to "Courts of Honour" back in Germany, the captain of the Deutschland died during the expedition.
