Ernest Shackleton, Trans Antarctic Expedition on the ship Endurance, 1914 - 1917.

1916 - Shackleton's men have been on Elephant Island for over 3 months hoping for rescue which they hoped may have come in about 14 days. Food is short and monotonous.

    "We are grubby and greasy, any efforts to wash without soap ends up with us using the dirt as a sort of polish."

1903 - First engineer Alan Ramsay (aged 26) dies of a heart condition on Laurie Island, South Orkneys, he was buried on the island
