Ernest Shackleton, Trans Antarctic Expedition on the ship Endurance, 1914 - 1917.
1915 - The Aurora with Shackleton's Ross Sea party snaps her anchor cables with "explosive reports" at Cape Evans during a blizzard and is carried out into the Southern Ocean encased in a large ice floe she was frozen into, stranding 10 men ashore with few provisions, they will not be rescued for another 20 months until January 1917. She is frozen into a heavy ice floe and will drift the open ocean for 312 days.
