1908 - First motor car arrives in Antarctica during Shackleton's expedition.

"Under favourable circumstances Lieutenant Shackleton computes that the machine
can travel 150 miles in twenty four hours and .... he thinks
there would be a fair chance of sprinting to the pole"
Interview in "The Car". While the car, an Arrol-Johnston provided for free in return for its advertising potential, proved useful at pulling sleds over favourable surfaces, more often than not the wheels spun on the snow and the engine suffered from overheating leading to it being little used.
