A not uncommon occurrence in early Antarctic exploration when burning fossil fuels with inadequate ventilation to retain heat. They both recovered.
Ernest Shackleton, Trans Antarctic Expedition on the ship Endurance, 1914 - 1917.
1916 - After 165 days living on floating ice floes in the Weddell Sea, Shackleton, launches 3 lifeboats for Elephant Island as the ice breaks beneath them. The journey will be described by some as the worst part of the whole ordeal.
