1914 - Early August, Austrian Felix König a member of Filchner's Second German Antarctic Expedition on the Deutschland is denied permission due to the impending war for his planned follow-up Austrian Antarctic Expedition. His backer had bought the Deutschland that had been renamed Osterreich and he had the backing of Filchner, Roald Amundsen, Otto Nordenskjold and the blessing of the Austrian imperial family. He would have been in direct conflict with Shackleton's Endurance expedition. The Osterreich is requisitioned as a minesweeper and König serves as an army officer in the war.
