Douglas Mawson, Australasian Antarctic Expedition on the ship Aurora, 1911 - 1914.

1911-1914 - Camping in light drifting snow, a pyramid tent with four poles, a circular entrance that is tied closed and a wide valance that can be weighed down with sledging boxes or snow blocks is a design still widely used in Antarctica today.

1921 - Maxime Lester (pictured) and Thomas Bagshawe decline a final chance to leave Antarctica for the winter, the only remainers of a group of four expeditioners (50 had been planned, the leader had also left). They lived at the tip of the Peninsula in an upturned whaling boat, later extended by re-using packing cases.
